A scientific conference was held on Saturday, November 16th, in the Kambove territory of Haut-Katanga province, organized by the “Elite of Kambove” association. The theme was “Kambove and its Mines: What are the Benefits?” The meeting aimed to reflect on the contributions of mining companies to local communities and on improving mining governance to maximize benefits for the population.
Discussions focused on several key areas, including mining mapping of Kambove, a general overview of the mining sector, corporate social responsibility, mining royalties, the 0.3% allocation, specifications, adherence to commitments, and transparency. Speakers emphasized the importance of a balance between mining operations, economic development, and the well-being of the local population.
Representatives of mining companies operating in the region, such as Mika, SEK/Kipoi, COMIKA, Kambove Mining, COMILU, and New Minerals, presented their concrete achievements benefiting local communities, particularly in infrastructure (schools, health centers), social support, and environmental initiatives. These actions demonstrate a commitment to integrating communities into the positive outcomes of mining and contributing to sustainable local development.
This scientific dialogue thus highlights the crucial challenges of the mining sector in Haut-Katanga, with a focus on social justice, corporate responsibility, and the need for transparent governance to ensure the equitable distribution of mineral wealth for the benefit of local populations.
